CORPORATE VOLUNTEER COUNCIL REFURBISHED SPOONER HOUSE

THE VALLEY'S HOMELESS SHELTER

The Spooner HouseThe Corporate Volunteer Council (CVC) ofValley United Way's Volunteer Action Center refurbished Area Congregations Together 's homeless shelter - The Spooner House - as part of their Day of Caring project on April 19, 20 and 21, 1996.

Day of Caring was a special effort which links working people with short term volunteer projects for nonprofit organizations in the Valley.

Day of Caring pojects allow employees to experience the difference that volunteers can make. It provides a way for CVC member companies to work jointly on a community need or problem which has been identified and is too large or complex for one company to tackle alone.

The Spooner House - the Valley's only homeless shelter.

The Corporate Volunteer Council (CVC) was created by a grant awarded to the Volunteer Action Center by the Katharine Matthies Foundation. The Council is a coalition of businesses that meet monthly to exchange information about corporate volunteer programs and assess the needs of the community. The CVC improves the quality of life in the community as they work jointly on community needs. Corporate volunteers add a fresh planning perspective on addressing the community's problems as they contribute new talents and ideas to meet area needs. Once the needs are determined the CVC selects a date and jointly work on the project.

The following companies are members of the Corporate Volunteer Council:

During the recent Day of Caring project, hundreds of employees from CVC companies undertook a variety of projects at Spooner House. Repairs and a fresh coat of paint have completely changed the atmosphere at the shelter. Thaks to volunteer Marion Imber of Ansonia  the windows in the Shelter were decorated with custom designed draperies that she created.
