3-on-3 Basketball Results

United Illuminating and The Birmingham Group picked up where they had left off in the past by winning the 1996 Turner Construction 3-on-3 Hoops Tourney, the fourth event in the Griffin Hospital Community Corporate Cup presented by Valley United Way and the Valley YMCA. The tournament was held at Shelton High school on Saturday. United Illuminating captured the Large Division of the tourney while the Birmingham Group won the Small Division as they both went undefeated.

The event also included a foul shooting contest and a three point shooting competition. Pat D'Agostino of Griffin won the Large Division foul shooting title while Joe Seele of the Birmingham Group and Chris Branca of Plastic Molding Technologies tied in the Small Division. David Robinson of Turner Construction and Rob Gordon on Plastic Molding Technologies won the Large and Small Divisions respectively in the three point shooting.


3-on-3 Tourney

Large Division

United Illuminating's winning team in the 3-on-3 event included Gino Lopez, Wayne Tell, Bernard Smith, and Howard Hughes. They defeated the Griffin Bridesmaids in the finals to win the tournament. Along the way they posted wins over Griffin "A", Prudential Relocation, and ITT Hartford Insurance. Griffin made it to the finals by knocking off Philip's Medical and Turner Construction. Team members included Marcus Bartone, Ron Bartone, Ed Dalton, and Frank Picheco.

Small Division

The Birmingham Group also won four straight on their way to victory in the Small Division. They overwhelmed the Gordon Rubber Bouncers 26-5, thumped Plastic Molding Technologies 26-10, stomped TEAM, Inc. 26-12, and squeezed by runners-up Gordon Rubber Sleepwalkers 26-20 to post their second straight basketball title.

Foul Shooting

Large Division

Pat D'Agostino was sizzling in the Large Division Foul shooting event, and he needed to be as he edged out defending champion Wayne Teel for the title. Both shooters made 22 of 25 shots in their first round, but D'Agostino made his last nine shots to edge out Teel 22 to 21 in a playoff. Bryan Tichy of Griffin finished third by making 21 of 25.

Small Division

In the Small Division foul shooting, Chris Branca of Plastic Molding Technologies and Joe Seele of the Birmingham Group finished in a tie for first by making 17 of 25 foul shots each. Scott Simonsen of Plastic Molding and Bob Wrigley of Gordon Rubber tied for third making 16 shots each.


Three Point Shooting

Large Division

David Robinson of Turner construction shot like his NBA namesake in winning the Large Division 3 Point Shooting Contest as he made 10 of 15 shots to edge out teammate Steve Cataldo and Griffin's Bill Alberti who made 9 of 15 each.

Small Division

Rob Gordon of Plastic Molding Technologies made 7 of 15 to win the Small Division. Joe Seele of the Birmingham Group finished second with 6 and Glenn Casey of the Birmingham Group and Mike Corbett of Gordon Rubber tied for third with 5 each.
