The Community Corporate Cup has a new Volleyball champion for
the first time in six years as the Griffin Hospital Scrubs team
played like anything but Scrubs as they spiked the field to capture
the title in the tournament played at Shelton Intermediate
School. The Scrubs had a near perfect day as they went
undefeated in the round robin bracket play and earned the number
3 seed for the single elimination championship tournament. Their
seeding proved to be too low as they knocked off IDA
International 15-6 and Griffin's "Thanks for Coming" team 15-10
before sweeping runners-up Birmingham Health Group by scores of
15-6 and 15-11 in the championship round. Birmingham Group had
evened the score at 11-11 in the second game before Mark "The
Hammer" Gripp produced the final four points with his strong
serve to give the Scrubs the title.
The Birmingham Group had also gone undefeated in the round
robin play and had won their bracket earning them the overall #1
seed for the championship play. They toppled the Griffin
Outsiders and Rifkin Travel before stumbling in the final
against the Scrubs. Team members included John Yeager, Phyliss
Kaplan, Linda Cline, Dave Bassett, Greg Caloor and Pam Austen.
Griffin's other two teams did very well also as Griffin
"Thanks for Coming" finished third as they topped Rifkin Travel
in the consolation game and the Griffin Outsiders finished
fifth.
